CARE NOT CRIMINALIZATION: VOCAL-NY REAFFIRMS BUDGET DEMANDS HEADING INTO FINAL WEEK OF NYC BUDGET SESSION

NEW YORK — As the New York City Council heads into the final week of the budget session, VOCAL-NY continues to call for a budget that invests in services and care, and divests from policing and incarceration.

“You don’t have to look far to see the crises our city is up against, but contrary to Mayor Adams’ proposal, it’s nothing we can police our way out of, ” said Jawanza Williams, Director of Organizing for VOCAL-NY. “Our rents are increasing, our affordable housing options are limited, and the services and care for communities are in jeopardy under Mayor Adams’ vision. The NYPD is one of the only agencies that would receive more funding – the antithesis of what we need and what we’ve been calling for. Now we are looking to the City Council to fight for a budget that will actually invest in our communities.”

VOCAL-NY has worked in coalition with Communities United for Police Reform and The People’s Plan to call for a budget that provides #CareNotCuts. Read more about budget demands here.
