Overdose Prevention

Narcan ( Naloxone ) is an over the counter medication that will prevent an overdose caused by opiates. Opiates include Heroin, Fentanyl, and prescription pain medications such as Methadone, Percocet, Vicodin, Codeine, Dilaudid and Oxycodone. Sometimes other drugs including cocaine and methamphetamine are mixed or laced with fentanyl.

In 2021, approximately 108,000 lives were lost in the US due to opiate overdose, including 2,668 in NYC. Most of these overdose deaths were unintentional and all of them were preventable.

Everyone should have Narcan on hand, including those who use drugs, have a friend or family member who may use drugs, or knows someone who may use drugs.

You can become trained on how to recognize and respond to an opiate overdose by administering Narcan in as little as 10 minutes.
