VOCAL-NY Slams Council Members Seeking to Cut Services and Care for More Police
NEW YORK — Following news that City Council Speaker Julie Menin opposed Mayor Mamdani’s decision to not increase the NYPD headcount, VOCAL-NY released the following statement, attributable to Civil Rights Campaign Director, Nick Encalada-Malinowski.
“Arguing that we should be spending tens of millions of dollars to expand the largest municipal police force on the planet, thereby underfunding the social services that can actually address poverty and public suffering is just bad public policy,” said Nick Encalada-Malinowski, Civil Rights Campaign Director at VOCAL-NY. “The police, by definition, simply cannot mitigate the social issues New Yorkers are facing and want resolved; what we actually need are real solutions that provide housing, services and care.”
