VOCAL-NY DEMANDS JUSTICE FOR WIN ROZARIO; CALLS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY FROM NYPD FOR THE MURDER OF A YOUNG MAN

Community Reiterates Calls for the Immediate Removal of NYPD from Mental Health Calls

NEW YORK — Today, VOCAL-NY joined the family of Win Rozario – who was killed by the NYPD while experiencing a mental health crisis in 2024 – to demand accountability and justice for the murder of their loved one.

“I feel sad, I feel mad. I feel for Win’s mother, my heart aches for her. If my daughter wasn’t with me when police responded to my son’s mental health crisis it would’ve been the same outcome as Win Rozario. There’s no reason at all for police to be involved in mental health crisis responses. I’ll never tell someone to call 911 in that situation because cops just heighten the situation. Nothing can bring her son back but the cops involved need to be held accountable. They kill us in the street, they kill us in our homes and nothing is ever done. If we don’t end qualified immunity, this will keep happening over and over again,” said Susan Shervington, a leader with VOCAL-NY from Queens.

BACKGROUND:

In March 2024, NYPD murdered Win Rozario, a 19-year-old in Queens suffering from a mental health crisis. For over a year, the Rozario family have been demanding to meet with Mayor Adams. Mayor Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch have refused to hold the officers accountable, a pattern we’ve seen with city officials in many other NYPD killings.
