When we think about women who get VOCAL, Public Advocate Letitia “Tish” James is among the first to come to mind. That’s why we are presenting her with the Bob Kohler VOCAL for Justice Award on Thursday, June 18th at 6pm at 1199/SEIU 330 West 42nd Street, New York, NY. Buy your tickets here.
Letitia James was sworn in as the Public Advocate for the City of New York, the first woman of color to hold a citywide position in our city’s history. In her first months in office, she successfully pushed forth proposals to bring Universal School Lunch and pilot body-worn cameras for the NYPD. In fall 2014, the office re-launched the city’s Worst Landlords Watchlist, expanding the list and adding significant technological upgrades.
As a City Council Member, Tish James passed the “Safe Housing Act,” a proposal initiated by VOCAL and allies to make it easier for NYC tenants to fix their housing violations.
It seems like no matter what we are fighting for from housing to police reform to a living wage, Public Advocate James is right by our side. We count her as one of our closest allies, and are elated to honor her at our gala on Thursday.
Meet Letitia James at our She’s So VOCAL Gala on June 18th. Please buy your tickets now for this special event celebrating women, like Letitia, who have dedicated their lives and careers to ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the drug war, and mass incarceration.
You can also toast the accomplishments of Letitia, and our other women leaders by sponsoring the event or buying a journal ad in their honor.
