New York, NY: Today at the LGBT Community Center, nearly 100 VOCAL members joined allies to witness the historic acceptance of the Blueprint to End AIDS by Governor Cuomo. VOCAL-NY is a grassroots membership organization committed to ending AIDS, ending the drug war and ending mass incarceration. Former NYS Health Commissioner Dr. Nirav Shah first announced the Cuomo Administration’s commitment to ending the AIDS epidemic in New York at VOCAL’s 2014 HIV/AIDS Legislative Awareness Day. In June 2014, Governor Cuomo announced his personal commitment to making New York the first state to end AIDS at New York City’s annual pride parade. Cuomo convened a Task Force to develop the Blueprint to End AIDS which included VOCAL-NY Executive Director, Jennifer Flynn.
“We thank Governor Cuomo for endorsing our plan to end AIDS. All New Yorkers need access to condoms, syringes, PReP, PEP, treatment and housing. Today marks the start of the end of AIDS in New York State. We are now turning to all elected officials to fund this blueprint,” said Reginald Brown, VOCAL-NY community leader.
The blueprint includes recommendations such as the creation of a single point of access where low-income HIV+ New Yorkers can access enhanced rental assistance, and increased food and transportation allowance. It also includes a recommendation to fully legalize syringe possession and comprehensively end the use of condoms as evidence of crime.
