We believe in supporting a broad-based movement for social justice that unites diverse communities and issue areas. Addressing the root causes of HIV/AIDS, the war on drugs and mass incarceration requires working towards more just, livable and safe communities where people can realize their basic human rights.
Here are just some of the coalitions and alliances we participate in:
National People’s Action is a network of community power organizations from across the country working to advance a national economic and racial justice agenda. VOCAl-NY is fully committed to NPA’s mission of putting people before profits and working towards a more just and equitable society.
Communities United for Police Reform is an unprecedented, non-partisan campaign to end discriminatory policing practices in New York, and to build a lasting movement that promotes public safety and policing practices based on cooperation and respect — not discriminatory targeting and harassment. VOCAL-NY believes biased policing practices have driven the criminalization of people who are homeless, LGBT, youth of color and other marginalized New Yorkers. Street level harassment by police also undermines harm reduction programs like syringe exchange and overdose prevention that save lives.
The Caring Across Generations campaign seeks to transform the care industry and the way we care for each other. The campaign is building a coalition of community, worker, elder, faith-based, disability, policy and advocacy organizations and individuals committed to justice, dignity and high-quality care for both care givers and those receiving care. Many VOCAL-NY members either rely on homecare to remain outside of institutional settings or have served as caregivers, either as employed home health aides or unpaid caregivers for family and friends affected by HIV and other health issues.
The Real Rent Reform is a coalition of tenants, community, labor, legal, political, and union groups – among others – working from the grassroots to pass progressive pro-tenant legislation in New York. Safe and affordable housing are paramount issues for VOCAL-NY members, especially those whose health is put at risk when landlords are allowed to ignore poor building conditions or illegally evict tenants.
Pushback Network is a national collaboration of indigenous, grassroots organizations and networks committed to building bottom-up, state-based alliances that change both the composition and levels of participation of the electorate.
Right to the City is a national alliance of membership-based organizations and allies organizing to build a united response to gentrification and displacement in our cities. RTTC’s goal is to build a national urban movement for housing, education, health, racial justice and democracy.
